TIGER LEAPING GORGE + SHANGRI LA

We left early in the morning to drive through the beautiful wooded mountains to see the Tiger Leaping Gorge(can you see the tiger?)-a place in the Yangtze River where it roars over huge boulders so loud that you can't hear yourself talk! I certainly wouldn't want to fall into it!

2 hours later we were on a plateau 10,000 feet above sea levelentering the ancient city now called Shangri La(before 2002 it was called Diqing). The people here look different from any others that we've seen because they are mainly Tibetans, from very high up in the Himalayan Mountains. They dress in heavier woven clothes and have darker skin. They raise pigs, cows, chickens- and yaks as well as corn and barley. Outside of the ancient city they have many modern buildings, cars, 3 wheeled taxis, and markets to shop in. The children from the countryside come and live in the city to go to school during the week and then go home on the weekends.
